2K Games has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this strategic move through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the requirement for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the developers is now overhauling the project with a renewed vision, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
The news follows a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to contribute to the beloved franchise development group.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I know you all just completed your town hall - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a note, I expressed the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re eager for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you consistently demonstrate that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its potential to our audience.
The trust in this project increases every day. To boost the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Studio Head of the team. After some time of talks, he comes aboard us on the specified date.
Ben’s management and expertise in the PVP shooter genre is considerable, having spent the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most recognizable franchises in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming Ben next week. We are all excited to continue witnessing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to ahead.
David
The appointee currently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in various development positions on the Call of Duty games, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.
The upcoming game was unveiled in October 2024 alongside a early access event. At the time, the developers presented the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person action-packed experience and an innovative step forward on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Challenge the competition with new abilities, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every session. Will you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos does not have an announced debut schedule or consoles, but players can look forward to additional details as creation progresses.
