At least thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
