The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
