Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
